Calamity & Hydra's Story:
Recovering Female Northern Diamondback Terrapins

Day 5: Waking Up

Wake-up time came for the girls at 6am this morning. After an examination and the removal of a couple more pits that finally decided to come loose both Calamity & Hydra were placed in their soaking sinks of clear clean freshwater to rehydrate and eat breakfast. Calamity began eating her smelt quickly as per usual. We tried something different with Hydra today. Rather than putting the entire smelt fish in the water, we broke it up into bite size pieces. That Worked! Hydra ate her breakfast this morning without a problem.

Both turtles seem more alert today and as-if they are beginning to understand the routine. While walking them from the dry dock area to the running water of their respective sinks they stretched their necks way out looking anxious to begin the day and aware of what was coming next. Their activity levels have increased and we are beginning to have even higher hopes for their recovery.

This weekend I will be picking up another WaterlandTub for them to use as an outdoor environment. Once that is setup they should be able to spend most days outside with both land and water available to them in the sun. Their evenings, however, will continue to be spent in the dry dock hotel and they will continue to take medicated baths twice daily for at least another month...likely longer.
