Calamity & Hydra's Story:
Abused Female Northern Diamondback Terrapins
Day 2: Eat, Sleep & Dry Dock!
This morning we offered a smelt for breakfast and though Hydra was still stubbornly refusing to eat, Calamity couldn't get enough! Calamity ended up eating three large smelt fish in a frenzy to rip them apart and chew them up as fast as she could. We were excited to see her willingness and strength to devour these tasty delights.
We setup the Drydock Hotel for the girls today. Complete with one large rubbermaid tub, full lighting, and towels for comfort. The girls began basking in this forced drydocked environment (since they had not yet began to bask on their own) at 10:45 AM. The first two hours have gone fantastically. After a bit of exploration, both found their favorite spot and began to rest and bask in the warmth of the manmade dry sunlight.
After 6 hours of drydocking we put them back in the pool of water to rehydrate, stretch out, and nibble some more. After some coaxing, Hydra finally decided to eat a smelt. Calamity ate two ;)
We gave them about 30 minutes in the pool and then brought them in for Nolvason Baths. After giving them each a 15 minute bath, rinsing them completely, and debriding a bit more in the process, they were both returned to the dry dock hotel where they are currently resting.
