Calamity & Hydra's Story:
Recovering Female Northern Diamondback Terrapins
Day 14: Am I getting fat? Mar 01, 2004
We've changed the filtration and general setup of the waterlandtub that Calamity and Hydra currently reside in while they heal. They now have a full blown bio filtration pond filter on their tub rated for 1,000 gallon ponds. The goal here is obviously to keep the water as clean as possible via frequent water changes and heavy duty filtration. The tub has also been moved to a location that receives more natural sunlight and the heat lamp as well as the UVB lamps have been replaced to ensure the strongest possible lighting equipment is available to them.
Both are enjoying mussels, small salad shrimps (shelled and detailed from the butcher), smelt, and grammars. It's not the diet we hope they spend the rest of their lives on but it is the various things we've found that they will eat willingly and we're simply happy, at this stage of the recovery process, that they are eating.
Calamity eats a LOT more than Hydra does and is a whole lot more active, but Hydra is giving life her best shot and certainly appears to be trying to get better. Upon weighing both of them yesterday we discovered that Hydra has gained one ounce since she first arrived and Calamity has gained two ounces. We were tickled to see weight gain over weight loss.
