Calamity & Hydra's Story:
Recovering Female Northern Diamondback Terrapins
Day 10: Eating! Feb 26, 2004
Calamity has been doing very well as far as swimming, basking, and eating. Hydra however remained complicated in the area and appeared to be getting much worse. She would simply stay on dry land, collapse as if she were dead and never move. Our efforts to get her to swim or eat were failing miserably. Thankfully, this past 24 hours has given all of us a great deal of renewed hope for her!
In the continuing search for foods that may tempt her we visited the butcher at the local grocery store and picked up a bag of live fresh mussels. We are storing them in a bucket of cold marine saltwater to keep them fresh and alive. For feedings we simply use a butter knife to pry them open and then cut them up a bit within their shell. The shell works as a dinner plate for the turtles as it is set inside the water.
Calamity and Hydra both LOVE MUSSELS! Ever since Hydra's first bite she has become far more active, swimming, alert and EATING! The mussels seemed to have really woken this pretty lady up! We're very excited to see her alert once again. She's still not as strong as Calamity, nor as much of a pig, but she's certainly a whole lot better today than she was just two days ago.
